I’m all good now. Therapy is such a buzzkill!

Many people come to therapy feeling overwhelmed, but after a few weeks, they start feeling better. Suddenly, they wonder: "Do I even need therapy anymore? I feel fine!"

Or perhaps they may even find therapy to be a buzzkill when they are riding the high of their good mood and perceived progress.

While it’s wonderful to have moments of relief, sometimes this mindset can be part of a cycle that prevents real change.

As a clinical psychologist in Prahran, Melbourne, I often work with clients who experience temporary highs, only to fall back into old patterns when deeper issues remain unresolved. This isn’t because they’ve failed—it’s because healing isn’t just about feeling better in the moment; it’s about long-term change.

The Cycle of Avoidance

For some, feeling better temporarily allows them to justify avoiding deeper work. They think:

  • "Last week was great, so maybe my problems weren’t that serious after all."

  • “I’ve got it now. I understand my problems, I feel better. Let’s stop talking about my problems”

  • "I don’t want to bring up painful stuff again—I just want to enjoy feeling good."

  • "Therapy helped me feel better, so I don’t need to keep going."

But emotions are fluid. Without understanding the root causes of distress, these ups and downs can repeat indefinitely, leaving people stuck in cycles of avoidance and temporary relief.

Why Real Change Takes Time

Understanding patterns – Therapy isn’t just about short-term relief; it’s about identifying the fears, habits, and coping mechanisms that keep us stuck.

Building emotional resilience – Feeling better is great, but what happens when stress returns? Therapy helps you develop skills to manage emotions long-term.

Breaking the cycle – Avoidance may provide short-term comfort, but it prevents deeper healing. Facing difficult emotions and patterns head-on leads to lasting change.

If you find yourself feeling better but still unsure how to navigate life’s challenges, I can support you in building sustainable emotional well-being, challenge deep-seated patterns and build long-term resilience.
